Hello Michelle, I enjoyed your
article on Entrepreneur.com. I was wondering if
you could perhaps help me with one of our
current collection issues.
Our graphic
design department did some web and print work for
a new client. The work began in March and we still
have not received payment from the client. In
June, the client wrote two checks from a closed
checking account (which bounced of course), so
they took the two web pages they designed for the
client offline, as their contract stated final
artwork may be withheld if payment is not
received.
Now, the client is claiming they've
incurred thousands of dollars in damages and lost
business caused by the removal of the web page
(which the client never paid for). The client said
he no longer wanted to deal with our company
directly, that his attorney would be sending a
letter in the mail.
A week went by and we had not
received anything. The client responded
saying his attorney was on vacation and would
send something by the end of the week. Another
week went by, and the client responded by saying
our priority has been redoing and correcting your
work, I will try to get to it next week. 75%
of the balance due is for print work, not related
to the web site that was taken offline. The client
is ignoring this fact and attempting to make
it seem as if our company did not provide the
services agreed upon by contract, while,
in fact, 100% of the services were
performed with 100% satisfaction from the
client until it came time to pay.
Is this
something I should continue pursuing as the
company's A/R department, or should I hand this
over to our attorney?
Thank you for your
advice. Melissa
Dear Melissa,
I would have
senior management or the owner of your company
send this customer a letter demanding payment
in full and letting them know if they do not
pay by a specific date further action will be
taken. I would send this letter to the person
who signed the agreement, contract or
credit application with your company and carbon
copy their attorney if you have that
information, and the owner of their company.
Send this letter in a priority
mail envelope, and make sure to pay for
delivery confirmation. If they do not respond, ask
your attorney to send a letter. If they still
do not pay, report the debt to their credit report
and either:
1. Take them to small claims
court
2. Place
them with a collection
agency

Are you inspired to save a
life? Passionately Pink for the
Cure is a great way to
do just that! It's a fundraising program that
inspires breast cancer advocacy and honors those
affected by the disease. You'll help raise
awareness among your friends, family or
co-workers and help end breast cancer
forever!
How It Works:
SET YOUR GOAL Decide how much money you
want to raise through your event to fight breast
cancer. CHOOSE YOUR DAY Choose any
day of the year that works for you and your
group. BUILD YOUR TEAM Recruit
friends, co-workers and others into your group
by phone, email or in person. If you're hosting
an event, use our posters and ads to help build
your team. PICK YOUR PINK From
subtle pink accessories to head-to-toe pink
costumes, choose what works best for your
team. SEND YOUR DONATIONS When your
event is done, send back any donations you have
received and encourage your team members to send
in theirs. Be sure online donors use the team ID
number when giving their
gift.
Passionately Pink for the Cure is
what you make it!
The first chapter
in the history of Pink Ribbon, as a symbol for
breast cancer awareness, can be found at the
Komen Foundation's Race for The Cure, on
the 16th of June 1990. At this race, held in
Washington DC, the Komen Foundation handed out
pink visors randomly to the 8,529
walkers. Some participants wore pink
ribbons. A year later, in 1991, Komen
distributed pink ribbons to every participant in
it's New York City Race for The Cure. As
from this year, the pink ribbon became the
symbol for breast cancer
awareness.

Name: Karolyn
Ruben
Company: Bonded Collection
Corporation
Title: Senior Vice President &
ACA International President 2009-2010
Karolyn was the recipient of
the 2005 Top 25 Most Influential Collection
Professionals awarded by CollectionAdvisor
magazine.
Career Overview
Describe your
responsibilities and role within your
profession?
I'm Senior
Vice President and co owner of Bonded Collection
Corporation (BCC) located in Chicago IL.
BCC is a family owned, privately held
corporation. My grandfather Peter Rubin
started the business in 1942 in Detroit,
Michigan. In 1964 my father continued the
family roots and planted them in Chicago,
Illinois. My business partners are my
father Remey Rubin and brother Ken Rubin.
I oversee all sales, marketing and new business
development. In addition to my daily
business responsibilities I was confirmed as
President of ACA International for
2009-10.
How did you choose this
profession? Career direction?
I came into the family business in 1985
while searching for additional job opportunities
in communications. I was able to quickly
identify that I was able to apply my
communication journalism degree and help become
the voice and create sound sales and marketing
messages for Bonded Collection
Corporation. To continue serving the
credit and collection industry I equally found
my passion to serve in as a volunteer and get
involved with ACA International both on a state
and national level.
What are your future career
goals?
I believe that with my prior career in
journalism and current role within my business
and association involvement may create an ideal
career in the future for the ability to continue
to be a voice and advocate for the credit and
collection industry in communicating key and
critical educational guidance to both consumers,
agencies, regulators and legislators as well as
the importance of how our industry continues to
strengthen and support the global
economy.
Personal Overview
Where is your hometown?
Where have you lived and where are you
now? I born in Detroit, Michigan
and raised in Chicago, Illinois.
How do you spend YOU time or manage
the life/work balance?
I completely believe in balancing all
activities in order to maintain a healthy
lifestyle. Exercise, great eating habits
and sleep promote consistent opportunities for
juggling hectic work and personal schedules
while keeping a positive frame of mind and
healthy attitude. It is THE only way
to keep an A type personality in a B type
personality state of mind.
What advice would you give
professional women entering our
industry?Listen to your
intuition and sixth sense. Imagine your
possibilities and find the path to get you to
where you want to be both personally and
professionally. Surround yourself with
those who can guide, mentor and coach you to
who, what and where you want to be in
life. Always surround yourself with
influential people who tell you what you need to
know...not what you want to hear. Positive
thinking equals positive results...anything less
than that can potentially be your own worse
enemy. .

How Collectors can deal with down
economy. |

How Collectors can deal with a
down economy
By Michelle
DunnIf you're like most
of us, you have customers that are having
trouble paying you because of the economic
crisis. I spoke to business
owners from across the world to find out
what people, just like you, are doing to
deal with this situation. One woman who
is in the process of starting a personal
grocery shopping business is working
on persuading people to try her
business based on the comparison of high
gas prices and having to take
small children out to the grocery store
with them. Saving them money
and headaches. Another business
owner who sells bath and body products claims to
have only had a temporary drop in
sales. She claims people need
their products and will find a way to
justify the cost versus smelling badly or
getting dry and itchy skin. She claims for the
customers that she has already converted to
be her customers they will come back
no matter what the cost if the alternative
is the ?stuff? they sell in the grocery
store. Another service business is
reassessing credit limits and keeping
tabs on their receivables. They are now
providing options to their past
due customers to help themselves get paid
and help their customer through this tough
time. One business owner in the
Netherlands is not involved in the
economic crisis like we are in the USA but
had some great insights. When she has
a customer that suddenly is having trouble
paying her, she first tried to find out if
the customer is in temporary trouble or if
the situation is more serious. If you
have a question, run a D & B query or
check credit references again. She also
keeps strict payment plans and some times
then requires pre payment for future
work. Some tips to help you deal with the
economic crisis:
How Collectors can deal with a down
economy By Michelle Dunn
- Keep an eye on your accounts
receivables and credit limits.
- Send invoices upon completion of
work -don't wait 30 days.
- Offer more payment options.
- Make collection calls only to
someone with authority, not an assistant or
clerk.
- Be persistent and follow up.
- Hold orders until balances have been
paid.
- Communicate!
- Step up your marketing
efforts.
Remember that you are not alone
and you can do things to make it through
these tough times.
You will see Michelle Dunn quoted and
interviewed in Forbes.com, The Wall Street
Journal, Ladies Home Journal, PC World, Home
Business Magazine, Home Business Journal,
Entrepreneur, Professional Collector, Credit
& Collections Risk, The NH Business Review
and in many books including Home Based Business
for Dummies and 365 Foolish Mistakes Smart
Managers Make. Michelle has been a featured
guest on (NPR) National Public Radio and has
been in many newspapers and magazines worldwide
as well as on the CBS Early Show.
